Road

From Auckland it is a 8- 10 Hour drive to Wellington, best taken over several days to visit locations of interest on the journey. From Christchurch it is a 4- 6 hour drive to Picton, plus a 3 hour ferry trip to Wellington, and we recommend taking time on the journey.

NZ drives on the left side of the road and although it does not have as many vehicles as some other countries, its laws and roads are designed to prevent fatal accidents. If planning to drive in New Zealand please be aware of the Traffic road signs and Laws. www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode

NZ has limited multi-lane highways outside of the main cities, and they are mostly one lane in each direction. They are of a high quality, well designed and serviced. The mountainous topography makes for some challenging driving and may require more time than similar distances overseas. Maximum speed is 100kph in rural areas and 50kph in urban cities. Local variations apply, and international drivers need to use caution, especially if not used to driving on the Left side of the road, in a Right side driving position.
